Bought a used vehicle privately? Estimate the Nova Scotia Sales Tax (NSST) you pay when you register it at Access Nova Scotia.
Your VIN, price and value stay in your browser. We don't save them and there's no form to fill in.
Step 1: Your vehicle
Type the 17-character VIN to fill in the year, make and model, or type them yourself.
Step 2: Vehicle value
Market estimate from VinAudit, not the Red Book value Access Nova Scotia uses; your tax may be higher or lower. Market data by VinAudit.
Access Nova Scotia uses the Canadian Red Book average wholesale value. Check a value with one of these free tools, then type your wholesale estimate below:
VMR Canada · Canadian Black Book · AutoTrader.ca · CARFAX Canada
Step 3: Your tax estimate
Private sale: 14% Nova Scotia Sales Tax (NSST) on the greater of the purchase price or the Canadian Red Book average wholesale value, for purchases on or after April 1, 2025 (15% before that date).
Bought from an HST-registered dealer? The dealer charges HST on the sale instead, and you don't pay NSST at Access Nova Scotia. Ask the dealer for the final amount.
Plate, registration and other RMV fees are extra.
Estimate only, not tax or legal advice. Access Nova Scotia uses the Canadian Red Book value and determines the final amount. Exemptions, appraisals and dealer sales change the result. Last checked Oct 21, 2026.

Value seems too high?
You can bring Access Nova Scotia a Motor Vehicle Appraisal Record from a dealer or a registered appraiser, done within 2 months of the purchase or registration. Tax is then charged on the greater of the price or the appraised value. You pay for the appraisal. Get your used vehicle appraised for tax purposes
Already paid? You can ask for an NSST vehicle valuation review for excessive mileage or extensive damage. Normal wear and tear doesn't count. Get an NSST vehicle valuation review
Need an appraisal? Any dealer or registered appraiser can do this. To book locally, call Airport Auto Sales at 902-574-6796.
